Assignment 2: Old news: Holocaust

Where did Hitler get his ideas on genocide from? Who inspired Hitler?

T:  Hitler writes in his book ‘Mein Kampf‘ that he, around the age of fourteen, fifteen first came across the word Jew in political discussions.  He read those discussions and slowly got acquainted with the ‘Christian social party’, which is founded by Karl Lueger. He was an anti-Semitic, discrimination against Jews and his ‘Christian social party’ are sometimes viewed as a model for Hitler’s Nazism.

D: So now we know where Hitler’s views came from. If you look closely, the ideas of Hitler and Karl Lueger are similar. Karl Lueger was an admirer of Edouard Drumont, who founded the anti-Semitic league of France. So you could say that he was the man who in a way started the Holocaust.

What is genocide according to you?

T: “I think that genocide is murdering a lot of people who have a particular belief, race, ethnic background and so on.”

D: Genocide is, making a certain group of people extinct, by killing them.  This is what Hitler did, one of his goals was to kill the Jews. Better known as the Holocaust.

L: Genocide is a method for war that is forbidden. A specific group of people became massacred. The Holocaust is about the Jews. All the Jews were murdered by Hitler and his followers.

S: I didn’t know that much about Hitler, but I knew he wasn’t a good guy. I think that it’s not fair how he treated all the people. Everybody needs to be treated the same and needs to live with the same rules and opportunities. It isn’t fair to treat people different because of their religion and to kill many of them all in once. I know some things about the genocide, but by doing this assignment, I learned a lot more things I didn’t know before.

E: Genocide is a way of cruel violence against a specific group of people. These groups of people are just being killed in every single way possible, no matter how young or what gender you are. For example: Hitler, he did not like the Jewish People so he tried to kill them all. He wanted to wipe out the whole Jewish existence. Genocide is forbidden, but it was used/applied a few times back in the days.

assignment 6 The Canary Effect

Why is it called the canary effect? 

It is called the canary effect because back in the old days the miners would take a canary into the mineshafts, because when there was poisoned gas around the canary would fall down on the ground and the miners would know that they had to get out as soon as possible. Looking at this you can say that the native Americans were the 'fresh air' but after America was 'discovered' they are seen as the poisoned gas.  

Why is it ridiculous to say that Columbus discovered America? 

It is ridiculous because of two reasons:

 

1) you can't discover something that is already discovered. For example, when you go to someone’s house you don't go in their living room and claim it yours and say that you've discovered something that nobody has never seen. This may seem weird because who does that? But if you think about it this is exactly what Columbus did. 

2) Columbus' intension wasn't even to discover America, he was looking for India. That's also why native Americans are called Indians. 

What have you learned? 

Tirza: I've learned that there was a genocide in America. I never associated America with genocide, I always immediately think of WW2. But I never knew that it was so bad in America and that the native Americans were treated so badly by the government and that they were forced to act more like western countries. I guess I was blinded by the image the media puts out. 

Leanne: I did know that Columbus wasn't a good man, but after I saw the Canary Effect I have learnt that Columbus was a really bad man. I also didn't know that there was a big genocide. A lot of People were killed. In the documentary was said: "Kill and scalp all people; little and big", "Kill the Indian, save the man". It was a big shock to hear that there were so many people killed. 

Evy: I have learned a lot about the canary effect from this assignment. I did not know that Columbus was actually an evil/heartless man, he came to America and wanted to have it for his self so he wiped out all the native Americans. I also did not know that it was called the canary effect and why it was called the canary effect, but I think it is an appropriate title for this event.

Denise: I have learned from the canary effect, that Columbus is a bad man, he started a genocide towards native Americans. They were being scalped and murdered or they would cut them into pieces. Some native Americans were enslaved for money. A president in the 1800's wanted to remove the Indians, place them in camps. They were even sterilizing Indian people just to make sure that no new Indian can be born. The white people were so cruel. It is ridiculous how native Americans are treated. Nowadays Indian people don't get hired and the majority of the suicide actions in the USA are among native Americans. native American teenagers hanged themselves and it didn't even make the news. White people just don't seem to understand the pain that they were causing.

Sanne: I didn't know that much about Columbus. I only knew about the fact that everybody said that Columbus discovered America, but it wasn't the truth. I didn't know that the native Americans were treated so badly and that there were so many native Americans dying. I also never heard about the name "the canary effect". Before I didn't know about the name and why the effect was called like that.

Discussion:

The conclusion of our discussion is that we all agree that genocide is an awful thing but we shouldn’t ignore it. We need to acknowledge what happened in the past and learn from it today. At first we didn’t understand why it was called the canary effect but from reading reviews we found out the meaning behind the name. We also never thought that the racism against the native Americans was that bad and we were quite shocked by the images from the film, we had never thought it was an actual genocide. So we were happy to have seen this documentary and to be informed about this topic.

Back to the future: Old news assignment 1

Pictures: picture one and two; a man is sitting on his knees and it looks like the men that are dressed in black ‘dresses’ are about to shoot him. On the third picture you can see a group of men walking half naked and it looks a bit like slavery.

What is ISIS?

The Islamic state in Iraq and Syria. The ISIS is a militant group.

Why is ISIS doing this?

Their aim is to create an Islamic state in Syria and Iraq. They are trying to get non-Muslims to become Islamic.

How do they want to achieve this?

So, first ISIS tried to conquer countries and force the people who live there to become Islamic. Nowadays, non-Muslim countries are really strong and have much better weapons, so it’s easier for them to stop these attacks. The new strategy is to fight the entire non-Muslim world everywhere at once. They are creating violent events, so non-Muslims would feel insecure and would live in constant fear of violent death. People are becoming afraid and insecure about protection by the government. People would become exhausted and would become a Muslim, just to make the violence stop.  

Our Opinion                                                                                                                                                    

Tirza: I think that ISIS is a horrible group. They kill innocent people in a horrible way. They’re getting the attention they want but not in the right way. They’re trying to make non-Muslims become Muslims by threatening them and killing them. Others become scared this way and I don’t think that that is a good way to handle at all! People live in constant fear of their life, imagine how horrible that must be. I think that we have to stop ISIS as soon as possible.

Leanne: I think ISIS consist of a terrible group of people. They want everybody to become Islamic. In my opinion, everybody should be able to choose in what they want to believe, nobody should you require anything. They kill people for a silly reason. All people who are living in Iraq or Syria are scared of them. I think all the people who work for ISIS should be arrested. So that not only Iraq, Syria and neighbour countries, but also the rest of the world can take a sigh of relief.

Evy: I think the ISIS has a very strong religion and leader. Because they would do and they will do anything to add more people and make them also believe in their religion. They are trying to get more followers by threatening people. They do not only threaten the people. They also threaten the government and countries, because the governments and countries are fighting back against ISIS to protect their people from attacks. I think everybody can have their own opinion and religion, but they are not allowed to harm other people to convince them of their own thoughts.

Sanne: In my opinion is the ISIS a terrible group of horrible people. They have a very strong religion and leader who wants everybody to become Islamic. They try to make every non-Muslim a Muslim by killing them. All non-Muslims are really scared to get killed, and I think that that is not the right way of living. In my opinion we need to stop the ISIS as soon as possible, because many people are killed by no reason. I think that everybody should be free to choose their own religion, even if they live in Iraq or Syria. Nobody deserves to live in a place where they don’t feel safe.

Denise: ISIS is a militant group, they want non-Muslims to become Muslims. However the way that they try to achieve this, is cruel. They murder people and cut their heads of just to frighten people. So everyone is afraid for their lives and they think that the only way to stop these people is either to become a Muslim or fight back. It must be terrible to live your entire life in fear. I think that ISIS shouldn’t force people to become Muslim, there are other ways to get a point across. Violence is not the way to do it. People have the right to have an own opinion, religion and they should decide for themselves how they want to live their lives.

Discussion:

The conclusion of our discussion is that we all agree that ISIS is a terrible group of horrible people. Everybody agrees that people are living in fear of ISIS. In Evy’s opinion they also threaten the government because they are fighting back against ISIS to protect their people from attacks. We all agree with this statement, but we haven’t thought about it.
